Historical Background

Miaoli County is located at the mid-north of Taiwan . Its northern and northeastern border is Hsinchu County. Its southern and southeastern parts connect with Taichung County, but in between, separated by Da-an River and the Snow Mountain Ranges. Its western coast is Taiwan Strait. Its eastern end is Dabajian Mountain of Meiyuan Village, Tai-an Township. Its western end is Fangli coast of Wanli Township. Its southern end is the southern part of Neiwan Subward of Jhuolan Township. Its northern end is the northern side of Ciding Subward of Jhunan Township. The central position of the whole county is located at Fenglin Village of Shitan Township. The width of the whole county from the east to the west is about 64 kilometers, and the length from the north to the south is about 50 kilometers. The total area of the whole Miaoli County is 1,820.3149 square kilometers. From the northern side of Ciding of Jhunan Township, the coastline runs southward to the southern coastline of Fangli coast of Wanli Township. The length of coastline is about 50 kilometers. The shape of the whole county looks like a diamond.

Embracing plenty of mountains and few plains within the territory, Miaoli has a beautiful name called “mountain city.” Originally, Miaoli belonged to an alluvial fan by the western side of the Snow Mountain Ranges in Taiwan. Due to the continuous river corrosion, the alluvial fan was gradually divided into today’s landforms of hills and platforms, with several rivers running in between and forming different scenes of mountain rivers.

Topographically, Miaoli is divided into four landforms: plain, hill, platform and mountain ranges. Apart from platform, other landforms are regularly arrayed in good order from the west to the east.
